Of all the tools in the Vedic astrologer's kit, the Vimshottari Dasha system is the most precise instrument for timing life events. Unlike Western astrology's transit-based predictions, Vimshottari Dasha divides your entire life into planetary periods — each governed by a different planet — with mathematical exactness. Once you understand which dasha you are currently in, an enormous amount of life's apparent randomness begins to make sense.
What Is a Dasha?
The word "dasha" comes from Sanskrit, meaning "state" or "period." In Jyotisha (Vedic astrology), a dasha is a phase of life during which a particular planet exerts its dominant influence over your mind, body, circumstances, and karmic experiences. The Vimshottari system — "vimshottari" means 120 — is based on a 120-year cycle that encompasses all nine planetary lords.
Your dasha sequence is determined by the nakshatra (lunar mansion) occupied by the Moon at the time of your birth. This is why calculating your exact birth Moon position — using the Lahiri ayanamsa — is the essential first step in Vedic astrology.
The Nine Dasha Lords and Their Periods
| Planet (Graha) | Duration | Sanskrit Name | Key Life Themes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun (Surya) | 6 years | Surya Dasha | Authority, father, career, identity |
| Moon (Chandra) | 10 years | Chandra Dasha | Mind, emotions, mother, home, nourishment |
| Mars (Mangala) | 7 years | Mangala Dasha | Energy, siblings, property, courage |
| Rahu | 18 years | Rahu Dasha | Ambition, foreign lands, illusion, sudden change |
| Jupiter (Guru) | 16 years | Guru Dasha | Wisdom, children, dharma, expansion, marriage |
| Saturn (Shani) | 19 years | Shani Dasha | Karma, discipline, delays, service, longevity |
| Mercury (Budha) | 17 years | Budha Dasha | Intelligence, communication, business, siblings |
| Ketu | 7 years | Ketu Dasha | Spirituality, isolation, past karma, liberation |
| Venus (Shukra) | 20 years | Shukra Dasha | Love, luxury, arts, partnerships, wealth |
These periods are sequential and cyclical. If you are born in the middle of a Rahu Dasha, you will experience only the remaining portion of Rahu, then move through Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars — and then begin Rahu again after 120 years (longer than any human life, meaning the cycle is experienced only once).
"The dasha system does not predict fate — it reveals the karmic weather. How you navigate that weather depends on your free will, your sadhana, and your dharma."
Mahadasha, Antardasha, and Pratyantardasha
Each major period (Mahadasha) is further subdivided into sub-periods called Antardasha (or Bhukti), and those are further divided into sub-sub-periods called Pratyantardasha. This creates a fractal structure of planetary influence:
- Mahadasha — the primary planetary period (e.g., 19 years of Saturn)
- Antardasha — each planet takes a sub-period within the Mahadasha, proportional to its own total duration
- Pratyantardasha — further sub-divisions for even finer timing
For example, within a 19-year Saturn Mahadasha, the first sub-period is Saturn-Saturn (about 3 years), followed by Saturn-Mercury (about 2.8 years), Saturn-Ketu (about 1.1 years), and so on. Each antardasha carries both the overarching Saturn themes and the flavour of the sub-lord.
How to Identify Your Current Dasha
To find your current dasha, you need your exact birth details — date, time, and place of birth. Our free Jathakam Calculator on the astrology page computes your Moon nakshatra and shows your current Mahadasha lord and how many years remain.

What Each Dasha Feels Like
Sun Dasha (6 years)
A period of heightened focus on status, authority, and the father figure. Career moves tend to be significant. Sun dasha people often find themselves in positions of visibility — for better or worse. If the Sun is well-placed in your chart (in Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius), this period brings recognition and leadership. If afflicted, ego conflicts and health issues related to the heart and eyes may surface.
Moon Dasha (10 years)
Emotional tides run high during Moon dasha. There is a deep pull toward home, family, and inner life. Many people relocate, marry, or have children during Moon dasha. The mind becomes highly intuitive but also more sensitive. A well-placed Moon (in Taurus or Cancer) brings nourishment and prosperity; a debilitated or afflicted Moon can bring emotional turbulence, relationship difficulties, and scattered thinking.
Rahu Dasha (18 years)
Rahu is the north node of the Moon — a shadow planet with no physical body. Its dasha is often experienced as an 18-year period of intense worldly ambition, sudden changes, foreign connections, and a sense of insatiable desire. Many NRIs emigrate during Rahu dasha. The energy is electric but unstable. Rahu amplifies whatever it touches — positively if well-placed, chaotically if afflicted.
Saturn Dasha (19 years)
Saturn's 19-year period is the longest and most transformative. Saturn is the planet of karma, discipline, and long-term consequence. Its dasha forces you to confront responsibilities you have been avoiding. Careers built on solid work during Saturn dasha endure for decades. However, shortcuts, dishonesty, and laziness are penalised without exception. Saturn dasha is often described as a period of "heavy but fair."
Jupiter Dasha (16 years)
Jupiter governs wisdom, dharma, children, and expansion. Its 16-year dasha is generally considered the most auspicious in the entire cycle — particularly if Jupiter is strong in your chart (in Cancer, Sagittarius, or Pisces). Marriage, children, education milestones, and spiritual deepening are common themes. Even in difficult charts, Jupiter dasha brings a measure of grace and protection.
Planetary Remedies for Challenging Dashas
When a dasha lord is weakly placed, debilitated, or afflicted by malefic planets in your natal chart, the corresponding period can bring significant challenges. Vedic astrology provides precise remedies (upayas) for each situation:
- Rahu Dasha challenges → Rahu Shanti Pooja, Durga Homam, regular fasting on Saturdays
- Saturn Dasha hardships → Shani Shanti Pooja, Mrityunjaya Homam, service to the poor
- Ketu Dasha confusion → Ketu Shanti, Ganesh worship, retreat and meditation
- Mars Dasha aggression/accidents → Sudarshana Homam, Mangala Pooja, Hanuman worship
- Moon Dasha emotional distress → Chandra Pooja, Rudrabhishekam, charitable giving
"A trained Jyotishi does not read the dasha in isolation — they read it in conjunction with the natal chart, current transits, and ashtakavarga scores to give a complete picture."
