In Vedic cosmology, every human life unfolds under the watchful gaze of nine celestial bodies called the Navagrahas — "nava" meaning nine and "graha" meaning that which grasps or influences. These are not merely astronomical objects; they are living cosmic intelligences, each governing a specific dimension of human experience, from career and health to relationships, karma, and spiritual liberation.
Understanding the Navagrahas is the first step toward understanding why life unfolds as it does — and how Vedic rituals can be used to harmonise their influence when they create friction or imbalance.
The Nine Grahas — Who Are They?
Surya (Sun)
Soul, authority, father, health, vitality
Chandra (Moon)
Mind, emotions, mother, intuition, memory
Mangala (Mars)
Energy, courage, property, siblings, action
Budha (Mercury)
Intelligence, communication, business, learning
Guru (Jupiter)
Wisdom, dharma, children, expansion, grace
Shukra (Venus)
Love, beauty, arts, luxury, partnerships
Shani (Saturn)
Karma, discipline, longevity, service, justice
Rahu (North Node)
Ambition, foreign lands, illusion, obsession
Ketu (South Node)
Spirituality, past karma, detachment, moksha
Note that Rahu and Ketu are not physical planets — they are the mathematical points where the Moon's orbit intersects the Sun's apparent path (the ecliptic). In Vedic thought, they are shadow planets (chaya grahas) with enormous karmic significance. Rahu represents our unquenched worldly desires; Ketu represents what we have already mastered in past lives and are ready to release.
How the Grahas Affect Your Life
Each graha influences your life through two primary mechanisms:
1. Natal Chart Position
At the moment of your birth, each graha occupied a specific sign (rashi) and house (bhava) in the sky. This natal placement is permanent and forms the foundational map of your karma — your strengths, challenges, and life themes. A strong, well-placed Jupiter in the 5th house suggests natural wisdom and blessed children. Saturn in the 7th house may delay marriage but ultimately bring a serious, committed partner.
2. Current Transits and Dasha
The grahas are always moving. Their current positions in the sky interact with your natal chart, creating periods of ease or challenge. Combined with the Vimshottari Dasha system (which planet's period you are currently in), a skilled astrologer can time life events with remarkable precision.
"The grahas are not punishing you. They are karma's delivery mechanism — returning to you exactly what you have sown, in the precise timing that serves your soul's evolution."
What Is Navagraha Pooja?
Navagraha Pooja is a ritual that propitiates all nine planetary deities simultaneously. It is performed at a Navagraha shrine — a specially arranged altar where nine separate stone or metal images of the grahas are positioned according to the cosmic mandala described in the Agamas.
The ritual involves:
- Invoking each graha with its specific beeja mantra (seed syllable)
- Offering each graha its preferred flowers, colours, grains, and gems
- Chanting the Navagraha Stotram and individual planetary hymns
- Performing abhishekam (bathing) with specific substances for each planet
- A Navagraha Homam — fire offerings with grains, herbs, and ghee corresponding to each planet
Each Graha's Preferred Offerings
- Surya (Sun) — red flowers, wheat, copper vessel, red sandalwood
- Chandra (Moon) — white flowers, rice, silver vessel, white sandalwood
- Mangala (Mars) — red flowers, red lentils (masoor dal), coral
- Budha (Mercury) — green grass, green gram (moong), emerald green cloth
- Guru (Jupiter) — yellow flowers, chickpeas, yellow cloth, turmeric
- Shukra (Venus) — white flowers, white rice, white cloth, yoghurt
- Shani (Saturn) — black sesame, black cloth, iron vessel, blue flowers
- Rahu — blue flowers, black gram (urad dal), lead, blue cloth
- Ketu — multi-coloured flowers, horse gram, mixed grains
When Should You Book a Navagraha Pooja?
Navagraha Pooja is recommended in several situations:
- When you are entering a difficult planetary dasha or antardasha
- When multiple areas of life seem blocked simultaneously
- At the start of a new year, new venture, or significant life phase
- When your astrologer identifies multiple afflicted grahas in your chart
- As a preventive measure during Saturn's Sade Sati (7.5-year transit over your Moon sign)
- When you are unable to identify a specific planet causing difficulty — the Navagraha Pooja covers all bases
Individual Graha Shanti Poojas
If your astrologer identifies a specific planet as the primary source of your current challenges, individual Graha Shanti Poojas are more targeted and often more powerful than the combined Navagraha Pooja. We offer dedicated shanti poojas for each of the nine grahas.
For example:
- Shani Shanti Pooja — for those in Sade Sati, Saturn dasha, or facing karmic heavy-lifting periods
- Rahu Shanti Pooja — for those experiencing sudden disruptions, foreign travel challenges, or obsessive thinking
- Mangala (Kuja) Dosha Shanti — for those with Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house affecting marriage
